Why Is My Air Conditioning System Making a Buzzing Noise?

Monday, August 19th, 2013

There are few items we own that have such great potential to make our homes a pleasant living environment as our air conditioning systems. When your AC is operating properly, you can enjoy a cool, comfortable living space on even the hottest days of the year. Of course, when there is a problem with your air conditioning your comfort can really suffer. There are plenty of problems you may experience with your air conditioning system, and strange noises during operation are among the most common. Just because they are common and your air conditioner still runs, though, does not mean that such issues do not need to be inspected by a trained professional.

Call the Loveland, CO air conditioning technicians at Fort Collins Heating & Air Conditioning if your air conditioner buzzes when in use.

A buzzing sound coming from your air conditioning system can have a number of different causes. It is possible that this is an electrical problem. It may be the contactor in your system, which feeds the start capacitor. If the contact points are dirty or burnt, you may hear a buzzing, chattering sound coming from your system. If your fan will not start up, it is very possible that this problem has affected the capacitor, and that it is unable to provide the energy needs to get the fan going.

It is also possible that this buzzing sound is the result of a more mechanical problem. If, for instance, your fan has a bent blade, a loose bearing, or even if there is insufficient lubrication on any moving part, that may account for the buzzing sound that you hear. Again, this may not sound like a top priority. However, even the most minor problems with your air conditioning system can do real damage over time if given the chance. Schedule air conditioning repair as soon as you suspect a problem with your AC.

To learn more about why your AC may be making a strange, unfamiliar sound, contact Fort Collins Heating & Air Conditioning today. Our skilled Loveland, CO air conditioning technicians are always available to answer any questions you may have. Let us help keep your home cool and comfortable.
